In our last piece, we talked with Mann Eye’s Dr. Luke Barker about the countless ways to cool off and enjoy summer in Austin, while making sure to take care of your eye health. Today, we talked with Dr. Paul Mann about why summer is a great time to visit Mann Eye for your eye care and vision correction needs.

Q: Why do so many people decide they want to get LASIK going into the summer?

A: I think a lot of people do because first and foremost, they may have some spare time. Secondly, a lot of times, people come in and say, “I’ve got this vacation I’m planning on taking and I really would like to take a vacation without needing glasses.” I think probably the biggest thing is people like to travel, and if they’re taking a big once-in-a-lifetime-trip, they’d like to take it without needing vision correction.

I saw a patient who was going to the Blue Hole in Belize. She was a big diver and wanted to make sure she could take that trip without needing contact lenses. She was concerned about how quickly she could dive after her LASIK surgery, and I told her we basically had a 2-week no swimming policy, but after that, she would be fine.

Q: Do you see a lot of folks who like to go swim or like to go down to the beach?

A: We do. We definitely do. People like to get out of their contacts or glasses so that they can enjoy the pool or the ocean. After LASIK, there is a two-week period of no swimming, and it’s because if you get something in your eye, you may want to rub it, and that’s when problems can occur.

Q: How quick is the recovery time for LASIK overall?

A: In the majority of patients, it’s basically an overnight visual recovery. You have some surgically induced dry eye that you have to manage with artificial tears, but those aren’t life disrupting. You use your postoperative medicated drops for 5 days, and then, you’re done. As far as surgical procedures go, it’s a really quick recovery. You’re back on your feet with great vision, and you’re ready to go do what you like to do.

Along with Blade-Free LASIK, Mann Eye also offers dozens of stylish sunglasses with cool features like polarized lenses to make sure your eyes are protected at all times this summer. Come visit us at either our Barton Creek or Arboretum locations for your summer LASIK, summer sunglasses or both.
