Summertime is upon us, and there are so many fun-filled activities around Austin and the Central Texas area to beat the heat. Whether it’s going to Lake Austin, Lake Travis, Barton Springs or Hamilton Pool, cool water is always a welcome respite during the hot Texas summer.
It’s important to realize how much eye health plays into your summer activities. For instance, wearing contacts while swimming in either natural pools or the swimming pool in your backyard can lead to severe irritations, formations and even severe infections.
LASIK is a great alternative to contacts, however. I myself enjoy wake surfing, kayaking and getting out on the lakes a lot during the summer, and before I had LASIK personally, I had to either avoid swimming with contact lenses completely, or have poor vision during outdoor water sports. Now having had LASIK six years ago, I’m able to enjoy all the surfing and all the kayaking I want without hesitation or concern of taking out contact lenses.
UV exposure, specifically for our eyes, is also very important to remember during Texas summers. UV exposure can lead to cancers in, around and on the surface of the eye as well as benign growths, and can lead to permanent damage. Any time you’re outdoors, it’s recommended to wear sunglasses that have 100 percent UVA and UVB blockage.
Summertime is also a great time to up your style game with those sunglasses. There is a wide variety of great sunglasses with great style and great features like polarization, from Ray-Ban®, Maui Jim® and Oakley® that we offer at Mann Eye. It’s also great to protect your investment after LASIK by investing in a quality pair of sunglasses.
Come visit us at either our Barton Creek or Arboretum locations for your summer LASIK, summer sunglasses or both.
