The team at Austin’s Mann Eye Institute and Laser Center has built a business around helping others to see better, but it’s their vision for community that is making a difference in the lives of many others – both globally and locally.
For example, the practice, which offers specialty ophthalmology and vision correction services, is currently lending its expertise to Benevolent Missions International (BMI) – a nonprofit organization that provides necessary ophthalmic care to underserved citizens around the world.
Today, doctors and volunteers from Mann Eye Institute take annual trips to Belize and Fiji to give residents complimentary eye care, including exams, glasses and performing surgeries as needed.
Building international bonds
Dr. Paul Mann became president of the BMI initiative several years ago, and Mann Eye Institute’s Dr. Luke Barker says the venture has been a great way to build stronger community partnerships and give back internationally.
“With eyes and eye care, it’s easy to make a quick impact in a very short time,” he says. “It’s not like medicines where you can run out and a disease will come back. It’s a way for us to help and make a lasting impact for people who really need it.”
Back-to-School Book Drive: Donate books, “see” better
Mann Eye Institute is also hosting a summer “Back-to-School” Book Drive to benefit local schools, organizations and families – with a special “eye-opening” incentive. For those who donate either new or gently used books to any Mann Eye Institute location, they’ll receive a special certificate for $1,000 off the company’s signature Blade-Free LASIK surgery.
“I’m partial to the Berenstain Bears books, but any book is great!” says Barker. “You can use the certificate, or give it to a friend or family member, and we’ll take care of donating books to families, organizations and schools.”
Drop off books at either of the company’s two Austin locations: Find the Barton Creek office at 2600 Via Fortuna, Suite 400, or visit the Arboretum office at 4314 West Braker Lane, Suite 215.
